Southern Syria Erupts…Israel Shoots Down Syrian Warplane

This morning Israel shot down a Syrian warplane which it says strayed 2km into Israeli airspace.

According to the IDF Spokesperson Brig.-Gen. Ronen Manelis the plane took off from Syria’s T4 Airbase in Homs and flew “very quickly” towards Israel before being shot down and falling in the southern part of Syria’s Golan Heights. Manelis said that Israel had monitored the plane and that warnings were given in a number of languages and several different channels against infiltrating into Israel before it was shot down. Israel has no interest in getting involved in the Syrian civil war, he continued stressing nonetheless that “we are prepared for any developments.” The IDF “will not tolerate violations of the 1974 separation of forces agreement between Israel and Syria,” he said adding that Israel holds the Syrian regime accountable for the actions carried out in its territory, reported the Jerusalem Post.

Syria denied the aircraft left Syrian airspace and said it was taking part in actions against rebels in Southern Syria. “The Israeli enemy confirms its support for the armed terrorist groups and targets one of our warplanes, which was striking their groups in the area of Saida on the edge of the Yarmouk Valley in Syrian airspace,” a Syrian military official was quoted as saying by the state news agency SANA, reported Reuters.

The closing in of Syrian armed forces, and Iranian-backed militias such as Hezbollah, towards the Golan Heights, which Israel annexed decades ago after the Yom Kippur War, is a red line for Jerusalem. Israel has carried out multiple raids against enemy positions and air-defense systems in recent weeks in the region.

“Since morning hours, there has been an increase in the internal fighting in Syria, including an increase in the activity of the Syrian Air Force,” the statement said. It said Israel would “continue to operate against” any breach of a 1974 U.N. armistice deal that established buffer zones on the Golan, added Reuters.
