She awoke in a dank, dark cellar, her eyes swollen nearly shut. At first she thought she was dead; but then, as her sight adjusted and she saw the earthen walls surrounding her, memories flooded back and she thought she’d been buried alive.

But the 17-year-old girl was actually in the basement of Ipatiev House in Yekaterinburg, Siberia, during the thick of the Bolshevik Revolution, and on July 17, 1918, her entire family had been slaughtered in that basement.
