Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko met with American President Donald Trump today at The White House. Poroshenko after the meeting declared that Trump had voiced strong support for Ukraine.
“There was a full, detailed meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump. We received strong support from the U.S. side, support in terms of sovereignty, territorial integrity and the independence of our state,” Poroshenko was quoted as telling journalists by Ukrainian news agency Interfax Ukraine, reported Reuters.
Ukraine had been concerned that the newly-elected Trump administration would weaken the American stance against Russia over the continued fighting in East Ukraine and Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula.
Poroshenko traveled to Washington to meet with Trump before Trump met with Russia at the upcoming G20 gathering.
