Transdniester Rules Out Removing Russian ‘Peacekeepers’

The President of Transnistria, Vladimir Krasnoselsky ruled out on Monday removing Russian ‘peacekeepers’ from the breakaway region of Moldova. The narrow slice of land sandwiched along the Ukrainian border houses some 2,000+ Russian troops and contains a massive Soviet era weapon storage facility.

“On July 21, 2017, the Moldovan parliament passed a decision which envisaged the withdrawal of Russian troops from Transnistria, replacing the peacekeeping mission with some civilian mission, some vague police, or ‘[blue] helmets,’ and so forth,” Krasnoselsky said as he met with the chairman of the Russian Federation Council’s Committee for International Affairs, Konstantin Kosachev. “This decision is absolutely unacceptable for us,” reported Russian state news agency TASS.

Moldova has been locked in a life and death struggle with Moscow over control of the country’s future. Chisinau recently barred Russian media from broadcasting propaganda into the former Soviet Republic.
