Un-Permitted Demonstration By Supporters Of Opposition Leader Alexei Navalny Dispersed In St. Petersburg


Today, Friday, October 6th, 2017 saw another fairly large demonstration by supporters of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. The action took place in central Saint Petersburg, where according to the news outlet “Moscow Echo” between three and four thousand people were assembled. While the protesters were peaceful, they blocked a major artery and did not previously obtain a permit for the demonstration. Accordingly, they were dispersed by police, in some cases with the use of force. Up to 70 protesters were arrested.

It should be noted that Navalny supporters claim that they have no choice but to resort to illegal or uncoordinated protests, since the Putin government does not grant them permits for gathering legally.
