President Serzh Sargsyan, commenting on the forthcoming parliamentary elections and the Karabakh issue, stressed that he would not harm Azerbaijan, reports Sputnik Armenia. Elections will be held in the country on April 2nd.
“We do not want evil for Azerbaijan, but we wont tolerate anyone doing us harm “- said the President of Armenia, speaking to the delegates of the Congress of the Union of volunteers “Yerkrapah” (Karabakh war veterans).
“We go to the parliamentary elections with the familiar people, but in reality – with a new team, whose voice will be heard”, – said Sargsyan. He assured Armenian society that authorities will not feed him empty promises to turn Armenia into a paradise for the year.
The socio-political organization “Volunteers Union” Yerkrapah “(militias volunteer Union), founded in 1993, is a paramilitary organisation. Union members took an active part in the Karabakh war. The structure of the union includes more than ten thousand people.
Background
The conflict in Karabakh began in February 1988, when the Nagorno-Karabakh autonomous region announced its withdrawal from Azerbaijan SSR. In September 1991, Stepanakert announced the establishment of the Nagorno-Karabakh republic (NKR). Azerbaijan insists on preserving its territorial integrity; Armenia protects the interests of the breakaway republic, as Karabakh is not a party to the negotiations.
