Turkish military invading northern Syria to clear out Kurdish fighters reigned artillery fire on American Special Forces located nearby in an apparent ‘mistake’, according to reports from the area.

Newsweek has learned through both an Iraqi Kurdish intelligence official and senior Pentagon official that Special Forces operating on Mashtenour hill in the majority-Kurdish city of Kobani fell under artillery fire from Turkish forces conducting their so-called “Operation Peace Spring” against Kurdish fighters backed by the U.S. but considered terrorist organizations by Turkey. No injuries have been reported, wrote Newsweek.

The senior Pentagon official said shelling was so heavy that the U.S. personnel considered firing back in self-defense, but they withdrew once the shelling had ceased.

In related news, U.S. Treasury Secretary Mnuchin declared that the U.S. has enabled sanctions at the ready against Turkey if their behavior in northern Syria is inappropriate.

Turkey was given an inch and has decided to take a mile. The US could be back next door tomorrow. This isn’t Barack Obama you’re dealing with this time round.
