Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to shake up the Russian defense apparatus with another high-profile detention.

In what could be signs of a potential purge of the defence apparatus of Russia by President Putin, local media reports that Lieutenant General Yuriy Kuznetsov, Head of the Main Personnel Department of the Russian Defence Ministry, has been detained in Moscow.

The charges are currently unclear, although some sources report they relate to corruption, reports Inkerman.

Local media also reports that Deputy Defence Ministers Alexey Krivoruchko and Rusland Tsalikov had resigned days before their superior, Defence Minister Sergey Shoigu, was removed as Defence Minister and transferred to the Security Council. Earlier in April, Shoigu’s deputy, Timur Ivanov, was arrested on corruption charges.

“Lieutenant General General Kuznetsov was detained as a suspect in a criminal offense. The case is being investigated by the Main Military Investigation Department of the Russian Investigative Committee,” reported Russian state news outlet TASS.

According to the source, a search was conducted at both Kuznetsov’s job and his home. Other specifics about the criminal case have not been revealed.

From 2010 to 2023, Kuznetsov led the 8th Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, which deals with matters related to the Ministry of Defense’s service for protecting state secrets.
