The Biden administration looks to be facilitating weapons transfers from Japan to Ukraine, via the United States, in order to bolster weapons being sent to the front in Donbass.
This is a propaganda coup for the Kremlin, where the ‘Great Patriotic War’ (WWII) is very fresh on leadership’s minds, and purposefully so, as the memory of the war is used to help shape public opinion in Russia, and keep the Putin government in power. One only has to look at the annual ‘Victory Parade’ to understand this tactic.
Japan and the US are discussing collaborating on military gear in a bid to provide more munitions to Ukraine and increasing ways for the Asian country to repair American warships and jet fighters, the Yomiuri newspaper said.
The allies are trying to put together an arrangement in conjunction with an April 10 summit in Washington between Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and President Joe Biden, the Japanese daily reported Sunday, citing government sources it did not name.
A key theme for the summit will be finding ways Japan could help widen the US’s pool of armaments. American arms makers have been straining to supply weapons ranging from artillery shells to air defense systems that Washington has committed to Ukraine to fight off invading Russian forces. reported Bloomberg.com.
Japan and Russia still have disputed territory from the war at the beginning of the 20th century, and memories run deep in Moscow.
The four southernmost islands of the Kuril chain were annexed by the Soviet Union. Japan still claims ownership. Peace talks were ended in 2022.
