RUSSIA’S DUMA COUNCIL TELLS A COMMITTEE TO STUDY POSSIBLE REVOCATION OF RATIFICATION FOR NUCLEAR TEST BAN TREATY WITHIN 10 DAYS

The lower house of the Russian legislature – the Duma, directed a committee to study the possibility of revocation of Russia’s ratification of the nuclear test ban treaty within ten days.

The Kremlin chief said that Russia could look at revoking ratification of the CTBT as the United States had signed but not ratified it, reported Reuters.

Russia’s top lawmaker, Vyacheslav Volodin, then said the State Duma lower house of parliament would swiftly consider if there was a need to revoke Russia’s ratification of the treaty.

The comments by Putin and Volodin suggest that Russia is seriously considering revoking ratification of the treaty, which bans nuclear explosions  by everyone, everywhere.

The Council of the State Duma entrusted today the Committee on Foreign Relations with the task to study by October 18 together with the MFA of Russia and other agencies concerned the idea of revoking Russia’s ratification of the #CTBT.

#Russia plans to revoke ratification (which took place in the year 2000) of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (#CTBT). The aim is to be on equal footing with the #US who signed the Treaty, but didn’t ratify it. Revocation doesn’t mean the intention to resume nuclear tests
