As greater Moscow grew to over forty million people, the city needed more airports.

Vnukovo Airport, a former military aerodrome expanded during The Great Patriotic War, was upgraded to handle a large amount of civilian traffic at the turn of the century.

The Moscow government plans to further expand and upgrade the facility to make it a world class international hub.

The facility was shut down this morning due to a failed drone attack on the capitol. The attack was intercepted by air defenses in the Podolsk region of the Moscow suburbs.

Vnukovo is about 9 miles from the Moscow center.

“Today at around 11:00 a.m. a drone attempted to break through to Moscow. It was destroyed on the approach by air defenses. Well done military,” declared Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin.

Ukrainian attacks on the Russian capitol have increased after the failed ‘spring offensive’ which was much heralded by the Western press.

Russia continues to pound the Ukrainian Black Sea Coast port facilities.
