South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the governing African National Congress party has decided that South Africa should exit the International Criminal Court after it issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin on war crimes charges last month, accusing him of unlawfully deporting Ukrainian children to Russia.

The warrant has placed South Africa in a difficult situation as it would have to arrest Putin later this year if he attends the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) summit in Pretoria later this year.

“Yes, the governing party… has taken that decision that it is prudent that South Africa should pull out of the ICC,” Ramaphosa told the media, saying that the court treats certain countries unfairly. “We would like this matter of unfair treatment to be properly discussed, but in the meantime, the governing party has decided once again that there should be a pull-out.”
