The United States and Russia are moving towards an extension of the START nuclear weapons treaty. The Kremlin signed an extension straight away, because they realize the Biden administration will not pressure the Russian military to actually follow the agreements. So, they want to sign right away. The Trump administration pushed to include China in the new treaty. Biden has no such desire to confront Beijing.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed into a law a bill extending the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) until February 5, 2026, the Kremlin press service said in a statement published on its website, reported Russian state news agency TASS.

“The federal law ratifies the agreement on extending the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty between the Russian Federation and the United States, dated April 8, 2010, which Russia and the US made on January 26, 2021, through an exchange of notes,” the statement reads.

According to the Kremlin press service, the federal law enters into force on the day of its official publication.

“The extension of the treaty is in line with Russia’s national interests as it makes it possible to maintain transparency and predictability in strategic relations between Russia and the US and preserve global strategic stability. Besides, it will have a positive effect on the international situation, contributing to the nuclear disarmament process,” the statement adds.

The United States is optimistic about completion of procedures on extension of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) between Moscow and Washington by February 5 for a five-year period, a representative of the Department of State told TASS on Friday when commenting on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s signing of the bill extending the treaty into a law.

“There are still steps that should be finalized. But we are optimistic that the extension [of the document], which obviously meets our national security interests, will be finalized before expiration [of the document] on February 5,” the representative said.
