One Protester Killed In Minsk During Demonstrations As Violence Erupts

Protests have ignited in the capital of Belarus, Minsk, after the declaration that President Alexander Lukashenko had one another term with approximately 80% of the vote. Many Belarusians simply don’t believe the results and wanted opposition candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya to be their new leader.

One protester was killed in clashes with special ops units in Minsk, Belarusian Interior Ministry Spokesperson Olga Chemodanova said on her Telegram channel, reported Russian state news agency TASS.

“During the clashes with special ops units, which arrived to unblock the square, one of protesters tried to throw an unidentified explosive device at the law enforcement officers. It exploded in his hand and the man sustained fatal injuries,” the statement said.

The protests in the Belarusian capital have been ongoing for nearly four hours. The hotbeds of resistance to the law enforcement officers, who have been trying to establish order in the streets, remain in three Minsk areas – near Pushkinskaya metro, near Gorky Park and Bangalore Square. The forces are using tear gas and stun grenades.

Tikhanovskaya called for the results of the election to be nullified.

First runner-up in the Belarusian presidential election Svetlana Tikhanovskaya in her complaint to the Central Election Committee has demanded to declare the published results of the vote void and recount the votes at some polls or conduct a repeat election there, spokeswoman of her electoral headquarters Anna Krasulina told TASS on Monday.

“The results of the election announced by [head of the Central Election Committee Lydia] Yermoshina should be declared void,” the spokeswoman said, citing the complaint. “Due to the violations of the legislation that occurred during the vote count, a recount of votes is needed with the information being checked. In case the recount is impossible to conduct, the election at some polling stations should be considered void based on Article 79 of the electoral code,” she added.
