The North Caucasus is primarily an Islamic region in the Russian Federation. Culturally and religious factors may be behind a raging outbreak of the Chinese coronavirus in the region, infecting even Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov.

Islamic mosques are usually tightly packed with men, and generations of families typically live in one dwelling in the region. This causes a high rate of virus transmission.

Dagestan was the first Caucus region to become problematic; now Chechnya is a virus outbreak hotspot.

“Ramzan Kadyrov has been brought to Moscow with suspected coronavirus infection [He] is know placed under medical observation,” the source noted. According to him, the head of Chechnya is in stable condition. TASS could not officially verify this information, reported Russian state news agency TASS.

Kadyrov, 43, was reportedly flown to the Russian capital Wednesday, a few days after reporting flu-like symptoms, the Baza Telegram channel reported earlier Thursday. Chechen doctors recommended that Kadyrov seek treatment there after his “condition began deteriorating rapidly,” Baza said, reported The Moscow Times.

The Telegram channel cited medical data as saying that Kadyrov has been diagnosed with lung damage and a suspected Covid-19 infection.

“He is under doctors’ supervision,” Interfax cited its source as saying, reported The Moscow Times.
