Polish President Karol Nawrocki said Tuesday evening that if the United States establishes a permanent military base in Poland it will be called “Fort Trump,” he told Bloomberg Television in an interview.
Nawrocki said in an interview with Bloomberg Television that he is hopeful a decision on a permanent US military base will be taken — it’s “just a question of time.” He would like to see the base constructed before the end of President Trump’s term in 2029.
The negotiations on the administrative and financial frameworks of a permanent U.S. base are still being held between Warsaw and Washington. In the Polish government’s view, a U.S. base can be more than just a security guarantee — a strategic anchor which deters any potential aggressor from testing NATO’s eastern borders.
In recent years, Poland’s defense spending has gone up dramatically and is considered to be one of the highest in NATO as a percentage of GDP. The largest land army in Europe is being financed and equipped with cutting-edge American weaponry, including F-35 fighters, M1 Abrams tanks, HIMARS rocket launchers, and Apache attack helicopters. Compatibility with U.S. armed forces is near perfect.
Nawrocki wants to name the installation “Fort Trump” and is convinced the American President will personally attend the opening of the base. The message to Washington: no other ally is as committed to the United States as the Poles. The message to Moscow: the frontier is not moving.
The Poles know better than most what it means to be caught in the middle of a struggle between great powers. They understand that a permanent U.S. base on Polish soil is something fundamentally different from a garrison manned by rotating contingents.
Both governments have clear political will for the base to be established. The Trump administration has consistently rewarded allies who pay their own way and demonstrate strategic seriousness — Poland does both. It will depend on finalizing the outstanding administrative and financial details, but the direction of travel is unmistakable.
The move flies in the face of the U.S. reducing its European military footprint.
