For sixteen years, Viktor Orban made Hungary a fortress against the agenda being forced on the rest of Europe. He blocked mass migration. He defied Brussels on sovereignty. He refused to bankroll the Ukraine proxy war. He vetoed sanctions that were destroying European economies for the Washington Blob’s benefit. He was the one man inside the EU and NATO who said no — and meant it.
That era is over.
Peter Magyar’s new government has moved with the speed of a regime that knows exactly who sent it. In just 100 days: 25-plus new laws rammed through, the constitution rewritten twice, and this week a loyalist president removed by legislative force and replaced with a jurist hand-picked to dismantle what Orban built. Magyar’s coalition took 54 percent of the vote in April — enough to secure 71 percent of parliamentary seats and a two-thirds supermajority to do essentially anything. The machinery is now pointed at one target: erasing sixteen years of sovereign resistance.
The new president, Andras Baka, is a former head of Hungary’s supreme court. He served only two years as chief justice the first time around — Fidesz rewrote the constitution in 2010 and engineered his removal when he blocked government legislation. His return now is a signal, not a coincidence. The people who ousted him then are the people being ousted now.
The geopolitical consequences are not subtle. Hungary was the lone voice inside NATO and the EU willing to block aid packages, veto sanctions, and maintain an independent posture toward Moscow. That dissent is finished. Brussels is celebrating. Washington’s foreign policy establishment is celebrating. The globalist consensus has reasserted itself inside Central Europe’s last holdout — and it did not waste a day.
Orban’s network of national-conservative allies across Europe has not dissolved. But it has lost its most important institutional base. Budapest was the proof of concept that sovereignty was possible inside the European system. That proof is now being systematically dismantled — law by law, amendment by amendment — by people who spent sixteen years waiting for this moment.
Hungary will not be rebuilt overnight. But it is being taken apart at speed. And the people celebrating that demolition are the same ones who have spent twenty years insisting that sovereign nations have no right to exist on their own terms.
