Turkey’s Drilling Operations In Mediterranean Incite Calls For EU Sanctions

Leader of the European People’s Party in the European Parliament Manfred Weber has the European Union to consider sanctions against Turkey in response to the country’s “continued attacks” against Greece and Cyprus.

At Thursday’s European Parliament session, Weber announced that the EPP parliamentary group would stand by Greece and Cyprus.

Meanwhile, in a July 23 tweet, he called Turkey’s actions “unacceptable” and said that “even after repeated warnings” Turkey has not backed down.

During his speech, Weber said that there has been constant dialogue with Turkey, but now is the time for the EU to impose sanctions. He called on High Representative Josep Borrell to act as soon as possible.

Turkey seeks to deploy a ship to conduct seismic studies and drilling east of the Greek island of Kastellorizo from July 21 to August 2.

Once the ship appeared near the island, Greece made public Turkey’s plan and immediately readied its armed forces.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has also asked the EU to impose sanctions against Turkey.

EU’s chief diplomat, Josep Borrell warned last week that Turkey’s drilling goes “against EU interests, the sovereign rights of EU Member States, and international law.”

However, Turkey insists it is operating in accordance with international law, it is well within its right to conduct these activities and doesn’t have to ask for permission for drilling operations.
