Two Parties Sign Coalition Deal For New Kosovo Government
Ramush Haradinaj and Isa Mustafa

Political parties in Kosovo are moving forward with negotiations for a coalition after President Thaçi asked the second largest party to form a new government.

On April 29, Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) signed a coalition agreement with former Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj’s Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK).

Exit News raised questions on possible attempts by the LDK to form a new ruling majority even before the Kurti Government was ousted on March 25. About a week ahead of the no-confidence vote, LDK leader Isa Mustafa met with party leaders that are now expected to join the new governing coalition.

AAK will have four ministries in the new government, according to today’s deal: foreign affairs, justice, economy and education.

LDK will need at least 61 votes in the 120-seat parliament of Kosovo to get the backing for their government. LDK (28 MPs) is expected to sign coalition agreements with Nisma (4), AKR (2), Serbian List (10) and other minority parties (9), besides today’s deal with AAK (13).

The new government’s priority will be to remove reciprocity measures with Serbia, as requested by U.S. envoy Richard Grenell. The Kurti Government replaced 100 percent tariffs on Serbian goods with reciprocity measures, a move that led to its toppling under the alleged active push by Grenell.

The largest party in the country, Vetevendosje, argues that President Thaçi and political parties are violating the constitution by pushing for a new government instead of going to new elections.
