Russian President Vladimir Putin was sworn in to a fourth presidential term today. The ceremony took place after demonstrations in 90 Russian cities over the weekend, spearheaded by opposition activist Alexei Navalny, who was arrested and detained for a short time.

“Standing in the Grand Kremlin Palace’s ornately-decorated Andreyevsky Hall with his hand on a gold-embossed copy of the constitution, Putin swore to serve the Russian people, safeguard their rights and freedoms, and defend Russian sovereignty,” wrote The Moscow Times.
