On 18-19 April, the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will pay a working visit to the Republic of Abkhazia – Anounces Ministry Of Foreign Affairs of De-facto Abkhazia.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova confirmed that Lavrov’s working visit will start April 18 with the official opening of a new Russian embassy Georgia’s breakaway region. On April 19 the Kremlin’s diplomat will hold a meeting in Sukhumi with de-facto president of the Republic of Abkhazia.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia Mikheil Janelidze has already commented on the matter by saying that Russia is continuing its provocations.
Janelidze says that the move serves as violation of all international norms and underlines on the position of international community referring to numerous statements made in support of Georgia’s territorial integrity and state sovereignty.
“We see that Russia continues its provocative actions and steps. Unfortunately, the Russian Foreign Minister’s visit is not the first in the occupied regions. He visited them in 2008, 2009 and 2011. This shows a complete disregard for international law, international norms and principles,” Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze said.
Members of the parliamentary majority have also condemned this action, Zviad Dzidziguri, Georgian MP called it a “disgusting action”.
Abkhazia and another Georgian region, South Ossetia, are unrecognized separatist areas for more than two decades, occupied by Russia, though most of the world considers these two regions part of Georgia.
