The Ukrainian SBU, their offshore security services, took credit today for the attempted assassination of Putin advisor Alexander Dugin in Moscow, which killed Dugin’s daughter Darya in a fiery car bomb.
Many analysts believe the hit was conducted by the handlers of Ukrainian President Zelenskiy — the American security services. That is certainly one possibility and would be highly escalatory.
We would like to offer another possibility.
Vladimir Putin’s government was allegedly caught red-handed wiring Moscow apartment buildings for demolition after several were blown up during the Chechen wars in the 1990s. Many believe the Kremlin ordered the bombings to enrage Russians and build support for the wars in Chechnya which had been going badly.
We have talked with several Russians recently in-country and we understand there is great skepticism about the Dugin attempted assassination with the ‘man on the Russian street’.
The cynicism is rampant that the Kremlin needs to create a reason and catalyst to spike Russian support for the war in Ukraine, which could be waning as the conflict drags on.
The attempted assassination accomplishes that purpose.
There are also reports that Dugin may be a thorn in the Kremlin’s side as his rhetoric against Ukraine was very realpolitik, as was his daughter’s.
It is impossible to know who planted and pushed the button on the explosive but the CIA killing a highly regarded Russian analyst in Moscow seems overtly dangerous. (starting a war in Ukraine does also)
As always, one needs to look at who benefits from such an action.
