After the Russian-American talks in Alaska, President Vladimir Putin visited the Fort Richardson National Cemetery, located on the Elmendorf–Richardson U.S. military base, to honor the memory of Soviet soldiers who died during World War II.
Fourteen graves of Soviet servicemen and civilians are preserved there, including pilots who flew the Alaska–Siberia air route and sailors who arrived in the U.S. under the Lend-Lease program. President Putin laid flowers at the memorial, met with Archbishop Alexy of Sitka and Alaska, and presented him with icons of St. Herman of Alaska and the Dormition of the Theotokos.
He also thanked cemetery director Dwayne Mendenhall for preserving the memory of Soviet soldiers with respect and care. This moment highlights the shared history and alliance of the Soviet Union and the United States during WWII.
