With 92.2% of the votes counted, Moldovan President Maia Sandu finally overtakes the pro-Russian candidate in the 2nd round of the presidential election.
Looks like she’ll be able to continue leading Moldova on a path to EU membership during a second term in office, reported Visegrad24.
A decade-long struggle emerged in Moldova between Western control, and the Russian Kremlin agenda.
Moldova sits between NATO member Romania and Ukraine. 2,500 Russian troops are stationed in the Moldovan Transdneister region which borders Ukraine.
The current election campaign took place in the context of serious pressure from the authorities in Chisinau. Opposition politicians were regularly subjected to searches and detentions, criminal cases were repeatedly opened against them, and many media outlets were closed. In Russia, where, according to various estimates, from 30,000 to 500,000 Moldovans live, the leadership of the republic opened only two polling stations, and only in Moscow. As a result, many people, including those who came to Moscow to vote, had to stand in a huge line and eventually did not get to vote, reported Russian state news agency TASS.
