In an interview on state television over the weekend, the Director of Moldova’s Intelligence and Security Service, Alexandru Musteață, warned that Russia is planning an invasion of Moldova, possibly at the beginning of 2023. Musteață told TVR Moldova that “The Russian Federation intends to go further, with the aim of creating a land bridge with Transnistria, which is territory belonging to the Republic of Moldova.” He added that the specific scenario for the invasion would depend on how the war in Ukraine evolves.
Musteață added, “The question is not whether the Russian Federation will launch a new offensive towards the territory of the Republic of Moldova, but when this will happen: either at the beginning of the year, in January, February, or even later, in March, April…. What will happen after that, with regard to their intentions in relation to Chișinău, we can discuss, but this is a real and very high risk.”
The comments by Moldova’s spy chief caused a great deal of consternation among the public, so Musteață returned to TVR Moldova on Monday to further clarify his remarks: “First of all, I want to call on all of our citizens to remain calm. Today there were many discussions in public opinion about how to interpret my statements (…) The objective of the Russian Federation to continue the offensive toward the west, throughout the territory of Ukraine, remains valid for them. (…) The information obtained by the Intelligence and Security Service, together with our partners, indicates that, in 2023, we can expect with high probability a new offensive on the territory of Ukraine toward the west.”
