The Moldovan government today moved to ban media outlets with pro-Kremlin sympathies. Today, the Commission for Exceptional Situations in Chișinău suspended the licenses for 6 Moldovan television stations owned by or linked to Moldovan oligarch Ilan Șor and the Socialist Party of Moldova. This latest action follows moves by the Moldovan Government last February to block websites such as sputnik.md and gagauznews.md, along with Radio Sputnik, shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The government accused those sites of inciting “hatred” and “war,”  invoking the State of Emergency in the country as justification for its actions.

In taking this latest action, the government imposed itself as a censor over all news information disseminated in the country. In its statement, the Commission accused the media outlets of “lacking correct information in reflecting national events and the war in Ukraine.”  The television outlets affected include Primul in Moldova, RTR Moldova, Accent TV, NTV Moldova, TV6, and Orhei TV. Sor was the mayor of Orhei from 2015 to 2019 and is currently under sanctions from the U.S. Treasury Department because of his ties to the Russian government. Primul rebroadcasts programs from Russian state TV. The licenses of these television outlets have been suspended for the length of the State of Emergency.
