President Lukashenko of Belarus has famously refused to institute massive social distancing in the Eastern European country on Russia’s western border. As cases of the Chinese coronavirus rise, it will be interesting to see if this changes. Will the death rate exceed or remain in line with the experience of Western nations?
Lukashenko’s grip on power could very well rest on the answer to this question.
Confirmed coronavirus cases in Belarus have jumped to 440 from 351, while five people have died from the disease, the Belarusian Health Ministry said on Saturday, writes Russian state news agency TASS.
“As of April 4, 394 people are treated for coronavirus in hospitals,” the statement said. “After receiving treatment, 41 people have recovered, but five patients died as their multiple chronic diseases were aggravated by the coronavirus infection.”
