After initially rushing two patients who had arrived from China to St. Petersburg, Russia. to the hospital, officials cannot confirm if the individuals have coronavirus, even though they are suffering from severe respiratory symptoms.

“The issue of medical assistance for those citizens is taken under personal control by Health Minister of the Russian Federation Mikhail Murashko,” declared a statement today from the Russian Health Ministry’s press office, reported Russian state news agency TASS.

“None of the above mentioned patients has been diagnosed with coronavirus infection at the moment. We cannot rule out that their condition was caused by acute respiratory viral infection,” the statement says.

The press office added that the patients were undergoing treatment in St. Petersburg’s relevant medical institutions. Doctors say their condition is stable and all the required medical assistance is provided.

The number of people dead from a new type of coronavirus originating from China has reached 17, deputy governor of the Hubei province overseeing healthcare and medical support Yang Yunyan stated during a press conference on Wednesday, added TASS.

“As of 20:00 local time (15:00 Moscow time – TASS), the number of people infected in the Hubei province (where the virus was first located – TASS) is 444, 17 people are dead,”
