Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and United States Special Representative for the Western Balkans Matthew Palmer stated that the US will work hard to convince the EU to open accession talks with Albanian and North Macedonia before next May.
Palmer met with Serbia’s President Alexandar Vučić today in Belgrade, after his recent visits to Kosovo and North Macedonia.
He called the EU leaders’ decision to postpone the opening of accession talks with the two Balkan countries a “historic mistake” that sends “a bad message to the entire region.”
Palmer emphasized the US support for the Western Balkans’ EU perspective, adding that the US will do “everything in its power to convince the EU to change the current situation before the next meeting of EU leaders, which is to take place in Zagreb.”
