Ceasefire Brokered Between Trump And Putin Begins In Syria

A ceasefire negotiated between Russian President Vladimir Putin and American President Donald Trump at the recent G20 meeting in Hamburg, Germany, took effect on Sunday in Syria. Observers on the ground declared a calm began to prevail and no major clashes had taken place. It is unknown whether this agreement will succeed where previous ceasefires have failed.

“The United States remains committed to defeating Isis, helping to end the conflict in Syria, reducing suffering and enabling people to return to their homes. This agreement is an important step toward these common goals,” said U.S. National Security Advisor McMaster, reported The Independent.

“This is our first indication of the US and Russia being able to work together in Syria,” said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

The ceasefire began in Deraa, Suweida and Quneitra in the south-west, as well as along the Lebanese border at 0900 GMT on Sunday.

This agreement for a ‘de-escalation zone’ will be enforced by Russia, Jordan, and American forces.

“The situation is relatively calm,” Suhaib al-Ruhail, a spokesman for the Alwiyat al-Furqan faction in Quneitra, said earlier, reported Reuters.

“Syrian ceasefire seems to be holding … Good!” President Trump tweeted today.
