The Baltic nation of Estonia, one of the NATO members in the region concerned about perceived Russian aggression, expelled two Russian diplomats on Friday. Estonian Foreign Ministry declared that Russia’s Consul General in the city of Narva Dmitry Kazennov and Consul Andrei Surgayev would be expelled from the country.
“We can only confirm that two diplomats have been expelled,” said Estonian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mariann Sudakov.
“This is one more unfriendly and groundless action that will not go unanswered,” said Russian state news agency TASS agency citing a Russian foreign ministry official as saying in an initial reaction from Moscow.
Tensions between the two nations have been tense for some time now as Moscow increases its military capability in the Russian, Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad, which obviously threatens Western nations in the region. During 2014, Estonia declared an Estonian border official was kidnapped on the border by Russian officials.
