Polish Opposition Accuses Government Of Pushing Poland Out Of The EU

The Polish opposition party accused the party in power, the Law and Justice Party, of pushing to pull Poland out of the European Union, in response to the Polish Foreign Minister reacting angrily to the reelection of Donald Tusk to lead the European Council.

“Surely, we must drastically lower the level of trust in the EU,” Witold Waszczykowski, the country’s top diplomat, told Super Express daily this weekend. He said the summit, at which Poland was outvoted 27 to 1 to re-elect Donald Tusk as the head of the European Council, showed that Warsaw “can be cheated at any moment” by other EU members. He said the government would be forced to start “blocking” others’ initiatives in retaliation, reported Bloomberg.

Tusk attempted to use forceful tactics to ensure Poland lived up to the wishes of Brussels in issues of the rule of law. The Polish leadership reacted vehemently to the allegations and the tactics used. At a minimum, there is a serious rift between Poland, other Eastern European nations, and the political vision of Brussels.

“Law & Justice is seeking to make the EU repugnant in the eyes of Poles, wanting to take Poland out of the union,” Slawomir Neumann, parliamentary caucus leader of the Civic Platform, told TVN24 television on Sunday. “We want a debate over Europe,” wrote Bloomberg.
