Russia, one of the largest remaining markets for natural fur clothing is now requiring that all fur products sold to the consumer contain an embedded microchip. The microchip will contain information on the animal whose fur was used in the making of the garment, the country of origin of the fur, the fur color, and whether the color is natural or dyed. This step is expected to cut down on the wide-spread misrepresentation of fur clothing at the point of sale. A full-length fur coat, still the preferred way for Russians to cope with their long winters, rarely costs less than two thousand dollars and represents a major investment for Russian individuals of all economic strata.
