The Russian Ministry of Defense (MOD) has published a map showing the 10km zone along the northern Syrian border with Turkey that will be patrolled by Russian military police. Russian state media reports Russian MPs arrived on location yesterday. The patrol zone was set up by an agreement between Turkish President Erdogan and Russian President Putin. Turkish military will assist in the effort.

The map demonstrates the positions of Syrian border guards along the border, the zone of withdrawal of Kurdish formations and the borders of Operation Peace Spring, reported Russian state news agency TASS.

Turkey’s Peace Spring military operation in northeastern Syria is ending, further developments depend on the Kurds withdrawing their military formations, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Tuesday on the outcomes of the talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

On October 22, Putin and Erdogan signed a memorandum on joint actions in northeastern Syria. According to the document, as of midday October 23, the Russian military police and Syrian border guards will arrive at the Syrian-Turkish border to monitor the withdrawal of Kurdish military formations to the depth of 30 km from the border. Russia and Turkey will begin the joint patrolling of the area 150 hours later.

“Today, the Russian military police have begun to patrol the approved area in northern Syria in accordance with the memorandum of cooperation between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Turkey signed in Sochi on October 22,” a message from MOD states.
