Thoughts On Ukraine-Russia Situation…Poroshenko Really Wants To Maintain Power

It is not a secret that the Russian Federation, after the annexation of the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine in 2014, has been aggressively pressuring the former Soviet republic to move away from further integration with the European Union and the United States, including stoking a war in the Donbass region of East Ukraine where over 10,000 people have died. Since the completion of the Kerch Bridge over the Kerch Strait, which guards access to the Sea of Azov, Russia has been able to harass Ukrainian shipping and essentially close access to vital ports such as Mariupol on the Ukrainian coast. This is not the behavior of a country looking for peace with its neighbor.

It is also not a secret that Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko is running for re-election next year. He is also losing to his nemesis Yulia Tymoshenko in recent polls.

Presto – international military incident with Russia and martial law in Ukraine. What better way to stay in power?

Think about it…why would Poroshenko need to declare martial law? It was just an incident in the Sea of Azov. Why does Poroshenko need to shut down the whole country and prevent demonstrations in front of government buildings for several months, leading up to the presidential election?

Russia Confirms It ‘Used Weapons’ Against Ukrainian Ships

The legislation states that martial law will “create conditions for repression of armed aggression and ensuring national security, eliminating threats to the state independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine”.

This is a strategy of maintaining power, not of preparing to confront Russia. Ukraine does not have the military strength to confront Moscow. Poroshenko knows this and Vladimir Putin knows this.

Poroshenko created this incident to prevent losing the presidency, pure and simple. He confronted Russia in the Sea of Azov with naval ships and put his sailors at risk of harm. Last I heard six were injured when Russian naval forces opened fire.

I have written extensively about the insanity of bringing Ukraine into the NATO alliance. I have written about the dangers of providing Ukraine with American weapons. This will give Kyiv a false sense of hope, of protection.

Now the Deep State will be clamoring for new ways to confront Russia.

Ukrainian President Wants Martial Law

Ukrainians are fine people and worthy of our support in many ways, but protecting them from Russia is not one of them. Ukraine is as historically attached to Russia as Texas is to the United States. It is foolish to think otherwise.

American men have already started to die in Ukraine, with the death of a USAF pilot in a recent crash. Stop the insanity now.

Our troops should not be on the line to protect Ukraine; it is not our fight.
