Actor Steven Seagal became an honorary Cossack in Russia recently by being whipped three times. After the ceremony, he was presented with his own nagaika, or traditional leather whip. The actor was draped in a black felt coat called a burka during the initiation, reported The Moscow Times.

The Cossacks were a feared group of warriors from Russia’s southern steppes which protected Moscow in historical times. The clan was revived after the fall of the Soviet Union.
Seagal lives in Russia and has been granted citizenship. He has made noises recently about running for governor in the Russian Far East.
