Below is a summary of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s comments on the status of Russian forces in Syria.

While it is true, Russia did not face a military defeat, their forces essentially did not engage, likely due to capabilities needed elsewhere. It is true however, that Western intelligence forces have changed the nature of Russia’s force structure in Syria and its freedom of action in the country, due to the Western-controlled new government.

The Russian Mediterranean port of Tartus is a legacy of Soviet times and a strategic location for the Russian military.

Russia was not defeated in Syria, we achieved our goals there.

We do not know how much we need our bases in Syria and what they can offer.

We are thinking about the future of our bases in Syria based on the actions of the current authorities there.

We have evacuated 4,000 Iranian fighters to Tehran from the Khmeimim base.

We did not allow the creation of an Islamic caliphate, it was not terrorists who came to power there.

30,000 government troops and pro-Iranian units retreated without a fight.
