Ukraine launched its largest drone swarm against Moscow in two years overnight Monday into Tuesday, sending 637 unmanned aerial vehicles at the Russian capital region in a sustained assault that lit a Wildberries logistics warehouse on fire and pushed cumulative economic damage to Russia’s largest e-commerce giant into the billions of dollars.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed the scale of the attack on Telegram, stating that Russian air defenses destroyed more than 180 of the drones directly over the capital region, with an additional 17 intercepted en route. Moscow Region Governor Andrei Vorobyov reported further intercepts across Bogorodskoye, Ramenskoye, Pavlovsky Posad, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Voskresensk, Stupino, Kolomna, and Elektrostal — a wide swath of the greater Moscow area subjected to hours of drone activity from Monday evening through 5:00 AM local time Tuesday. Russia’s state news agency TASS described the barrage as the largest drone strike on Moscow in two years.
The most significant infrastructure hit was a Wildberries warehouse in the Bogorodsky district east of Moscow, where a fire broke out after drone debris struck the facility. Wildberries issued a statement saying employees were evacuated and the fire was “quickly dealt with,” and claimed no goods were damaged — an assessment analysts and prior reporting suggest is difficult to take at face value. Beyond the warehouse, Vorobyov confirmed a fire at a retail pavilion near the Globus shopping center in Kolomna that damaged a registry office, a store, and windows of a residential building on Sovetskaya Square. In Pavlovsky Posad, the roof of an apartment building caught fire, requiring resident evacuations.
Casualties in the Moscow region were reported as limited: a 10-year-old girl was injured when a drone crashed into a private home in Ramenskoye District, and two additional people were injured by falling drone debris in Kolomna and Bogorodsky District, according to Governor Vorobyov.
The strike is the latest chapter in Ukraine’s deliberate, sustained targeting of Wildberries specifically — a campaign Kyiv has framed as economic warfare rather than pure military targeting. Ukraine has publicly stated that Wildberries supplies components used in Russian drone production, making the logistics network a legitimate military target under its rules of engagement. The company, with a valuation estimated at $75 billion and a client base covering roughly two-thirds of Russia’s adult population, represents approximately 2% of Russia’s gross domestic product on its own.
The damage to that infrastructure has been accumulating rapidly. PBS NewsHour reported that independent assessments indicate up to 20 percent of Wildberries’ total warehouse capacity has now been destroyed across all strikes, with financial losses estimated between $6 billion and $8.5 billion — figures Fox News separately confirmed from multiple analysts. The Moscow Times put cumulative economic damage at up to 100 billion rubles, or approximately $1.3 billion at current exchange rates, though Western analysts using broader loss metrics arrive at the higher figures. Kyiv Post has reported that drone strikes have destroyed goods worth the equivalent of a major Russian region’s annual budget.
Meanwhile, Russian strikes in the opposite direction killed 10 people in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region on Tuesday, according to Ukrainian officials, in the latest exchange as both sides intensify long-range strikes on each other’s rear areas.
