Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned Monday that Moscow reserves the right to treat Britain as a direct participant in the war in Ukraine, citing evidence that Ukrainian forces have used British-manufactured drones to strike targets deep inside Russian territory.
“Russia has the right to regard Britain’s direct involvement in strikes against Russia as participation in the war, with all the ensuing consequences,” Lavrov said, in remarks that marked one of Moscow’s sharpest direct warnings to London since the conflict began.
The warning followed revelations that Ukrainian forces deployed unmanned aerial systems developed by two British firms to execute targeted strikes across Russian territory over the past six months, according to Clash Report. The aerial campaign struck fuel refineries in Volgograd and Yaroslavl, triggering domestic fuel shortages that Russian authorities have struggled to contain.
The Russian embassy in London issued a parallel statement Monday, warning that “London is deliberately opting for an escalation” and that “the higher the price it will pay,” the deeper British support for Kyiv extends. The embassy added that Britain would face “consequences for which it will have to answer.”
Britain has been one of Ukraine’s most active military supporters, having previously supplied Storm Shadow cruise missiles — first deployed against targets inside Russia in November 2024. Moscow has consistently argued that the provision of Western weapons capable of striking Russian territory constitutes direct participation in the conflict.
The drone revelations deepen that argument and give Moscow a new rhetorical and potentially operational basis for escalatory action against British interests — though what form any “consequences” might take remains unspecified.
