CDM has published a variety of articles about the persecution of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the largest Christian denomination within its borders, with close theological ties to the Moscow Patriarchate and Patriarch Kirill. In an attempt to establish a plausible contender to the established church, Zelensky’s government, with dubious “assistence” from the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholemew, established an “orthodox light” version dubbed the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. In its wake, persecution of UOC priests, confiscation of historical properties and churches, even desecration of holy spaces have ensued. The Holy Spirit is resilient to the whims of man, as Ukrainian Member of Parliament, Solomia Bobrovksa recently confessed.
Surely with resignation she recently declared with apprehension that the canonical UOC is still attracting young people even while the government has established a faux alternative under the umbrella term “orthodox,” even while the Zelensky government incessantly attacks the UOC, calling it a religious weapon of the enemy.
Evidence of the vitality and spiritual authority of the established historical church was revealed at the 8th Christmas Charity Festival on January 23, 2026 in the Rivne Diocese of the Ukrainain Orthodox Church, which was dedicated accordingly to “The Nativity of Christ.” The goal of the event was to raise funds for the cause of Pediatric Oncology. While the festive event was objectively a “success,” Bobvroska alternatively saw it as a “failure” in the government’s attempts to discredit and replace the original Orthodox church in Ukrainian territory. The regime’s efforts to diminish the place of the UOC in Ukrainian society and to marginalize it are the badges of dishonor ascribed to Zelensky and cohorts.
The parallels to the German dictatorship of the last century are clear. The morally bankrupt government in Berlin divided society and divided Christianity with its attempts to make it compliant to the Reich’s reprehensible goals. Nonetheless, truly Christian resistance grew in the face of danger and persecution producing such saintly believers, as the Scholl siblings (the White Rose), the Confessional Church (die Bekennende Kirche), Pastor Bonhoeffer, Maximilian Kolbe, Sister Edith Stein, and countless others. Zelensky and his anti-cultural minions ostensibly never read, or read and dismissed, the biblical admonition: Matthew 16:18-18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” (18 І кажу Я тобі, що ти скеля, і на скелі оцій побудую Я Церкву Свою, і сили адові не переможуть її.)
