UPDATE: US, Russian and Ukrainian delegations to begin negotiations tomorrow in Istanbul.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan expected to play a key role in mediation
The negotiations between Ukraine and Russia in the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul will likely proceed today.
Ukrainian President Zelenskiy has arrived and is meeting with Turkish President Erdogan, who is likely in contact with President Trump, as POTUS recently gave Turkey a present with the meeting with the new Syrian leader in Saudi Arabia.
The United Kingdom, who has been the force behind continuing the war in Ukraine is also attempting to influence the talks. British PM Starmer’s security adviser, Jonathan Powell, will travel to Türkiye to advise Zelensky on upcoming discussion, the Guardian reports.
Russia is sending a low-level delegation after Zelenskiy’s taunts.
“The ball is in Russia’s court regarding the ceasefire negotiations. Ukraine is ready for direct negotiations and a ceasefire, but Russia’s position remains unclear. We are cautiously optimistic about the progress of the Ukrainian peace talks”, said NATO Secretary General Rutte.
The duration of the Russian-Ukrainian negotiations resuming in Istanbul will depend on their progress, declared the Kremlin.
The meeting with the Russian delegation will only be to discuss the introduction of a 30-day ceasefire, declared Zelenskiy.
US Secretary of State Rubio declared, “NATO has the opportunity to grow even stronger. Trump is open to any mechanism that would take us to a just peace in Russia-Ukraine war. We want to see progress made in the next couple of days. There is no military solution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.”
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs commented — Every time Ukraine breaks an agreement, its territory becomes smaller. Zelensky had no right to call the level of the Russian delegation ‘fake.’ These are respected people, professionals, while he is a clown, a failure, and a man with an unclear education.
The Ukrainian delegation in Türkiye reportedly includes: President Zelensky. Foreign Minister Sibiha, Chief of the General Staff Hnatov, SBU Head Maliuk, Defense Minister Umerov.
Global media outlets are looking forward to the talks on resolving the Ukraine conflict that are expected to be held in Istanbul on Thursday at Russian President Vladimir Putin’s initiative. The meeting may mark the first direct contact between the delegations of Russia and Ukraine since March 2022, when negotiators from Moscow and Kiev engaged in dialogue at Istanbul’s Dolmabahce Palace, reported Russian state news agency TASS.
Once again, Russia’s delegation will be led by Kremlin Aide Vladimir Medinsky. Just like in 2022, the delegation will include Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin. The Russian Foreign Ministry will be represented by Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin who is in charge of issues related to the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Three years ago, Russia’s delegation included Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko but now, he is responsible for another region at the ministry. Igor Kostyukov, head of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, will be the fourth Russian negotiator.
Moscow will also send a team of experts to Istanbul, namely Alexander Zorin, first deputy chief information officer at the Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces General Staff, Yelena Podobreyevskaya, deputy head of the Russian presidential office for state humanitarian policy, Alexey Polishchuk, director of the Foreign Ministry’s Second CIS Department, and Viktor Shevtsov, deputy chief of the Defense Ministry’s Main Directorate for International Military Cooperation.
Russian FM Lavrov calls Zelensky a “pathetic person” over his “demands” for Putin to be present in Istanbul.
Trump commented on the reality that Russian President Putin is not attending in the video below:
