Russian President Vladimir Putin today said U.S. President Trump is serious about acquiring Greenland, and Russia must continue to build capability in the Arctic.

“Here in the Arctic, in this strategic and significant region, we are facing large-scale and complex tasks. We have to strengthen transportation, logistics infrastructure, expand economic and business opportunities with mandatory protection of sensitive Arctic ecosystems,” the president said.

The president added that it is necessary to consistently improve the urban environment, enhance the settlements of the Far North, and generally raise the quality of life, “so that they could have interesting, good, well-paid jobs, as well as access to modern education and healthcare services, making the Arctic truly comfortable and attractive to live in,” reported Russian state news agency TASS.

“The importance of the Arctic for Russia and the world is growing, which is leading to an intensification of the geopolitical struggle for positions in this region. NATO countries today view the Far North as a springboard for potential conflicts.

“Russia has the largest icebreaker fleet in the world, these positions need to be strengthened. Russia needs to commission new generation icebreakers, including nuclear ones.

“Russia intends to develop mineral extraction in the Arctic, including the extraction of rare earth metals.”
