United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres issued a bleak warning Monday during a speech before the 193-member UN General Assembly in which he said that the world is headed toward a “wider war” in Ukraine due to continuous escalations.

Guterres began his remarks by stating, “The prospects for peace keep diminishing. The chances of further escalation and bloodshed keep growing.” Guterres then continued with a concerning warning, “I fear the world is not sleepwalking into a wider war. I fear it is doing so with its eyes wide open.”

The warning comes as Ukrainian forces are predicting and preparing for the largest Russian offensive since the invasion last February.

In a recent update, the Ukrainian General Staff, which is in charge of military strategy, announced in a daily battlefield update that Russian forces fired on roughly 2 dozen towns and villages in the area surrounding Bakhmut, which has come under heavy fire in recent weeks as it has become the focal point of Russia’s efforts to seize the eastern region known as Donbas.

As the battle in Bakhmut rages, it looks less likely by the day that Ukrainian troops will be able to hold the embattled city as Russian forces encircle it in a tightening web of war.

Donetsk Governor Pavlo Kyrylenko said in a Monday update that the battle for the eastern territory is “heating up” as the Russians keep moving “new units into the battle and eradicating our towns and villages.”

Last month Ukrainian officials began warning its Western allies that the Kremlin was amassing hundreds of thousands of troops along the Ukrainian border for a Spring offensive, but thus far, nothing has come from those reports.

While discussing the war, Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky said earlier this month that “If Ukraine falls, it would be the start of World War 3.” Add that stark warning to the one the UN Chief gave this week and it appears the world should be preparing for war with Russia.
