On Saturday China’s Foreign Ministry issued an order for all Chinese nationals still in Ukraine to leave the country immediately. The evacuation order has brought rising concerns that China might be aware of more planned Russian airstrikes over many Ukrainian cities like those carried out last Monday and Tuesday.
This is the second mass evacuation of Chinese nationals with approximately 6,000 leaving Ukraine in March when Russia invaded the country. According to state media Global Times, more Chinese nationals are preparing to leave writing that, “Some Chinese nations still in Ukraine have signed up for evacuation from the country, with most registering for organized evacuations, while others are preparing to leave Ukraine on their own…”
The foreign ministry cited the “grave security situation” in Ukraine as the basis for its forceful and urgent evacuation order and suggested that nationals need “to enhance safety precautions and evacuate.”

According to the Global Times, people are taking the evacuation order seriously with 161 people registered for the government-organized evacuation and almost 30 people registered for self-evacuation as of press time on Sunday. The Chinese evacuation order has also been publicized by Russian state media.
The order comes amid Ukrainian attacks on the Russian city of Belgorod located across the Russian/Ukrainian border from Kharkiv.
Although it is unclear why China issued the urgent call for all nationals to leave Ukraine, it seems likely that more Russian airstrikes, or other escalations, could be coming.
