Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has confirmed he will run for re-election on March 31st of this year in the Ukrainian presidential election. His competition seems to be veteran Ukrainian politician Yulia Tymoshenko who has consistently led in the polls.
Poroshenko made the announcement at the gathering of his supporters and members of the Petro Poroshenko Bloc, which was held at the International Exhibition Center in Kyiv on Jan. 29, reported The Kyiv Post.
Poroshenko will be running on a platform to see Ukraine join the European Union, which is coveted by the Ukrainian people but is an anathema to the Russian Federation.
“The feeling of a deep responsibility before Ukraine, its past and future generation, made me decide to run for re-election,” he said.
“I’m asking the voters to authorize me to guarantee the Euro-Atlantic integration of Ukraine, the independence of Ukraine, the return of Ukraine’s territories,” Poroshenko said.
The Kyiv Post commented that Poroshenko may not even make it to the runoff however, as he is polling significantly lower in recent months.
