Warsaw Registers Poland’s First Same-Sex Marriage As Christianity Is Attacked In Central Europe

Warsaw authorities on Thursday issued Poland’s first official transcription of a same-sex marriage certificate, marking a landmark step in implementing European Union court rulings that compel the country to recognize same-sex unions registered abroad.

The move follows a November ruling by the European Union’s top court ordering Poland to register same-sex marriages performed in other EU member states, despite domestic law prohibiting them. In March, Poland’s Supreme Administrative Court reinforced that decision by directing officials to recognize the German marriage of two Polish men.

“This morning we issued the first transcription of a marriage certificate for a same-sex couple, in accordance with the court rulings,” Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski announced.

Trzaskowski added that the city will now proactively recognize other same-sex marriages registered elsewhere in the EU, even in the absence of individual court orders.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed support for the development earlier this week, saying his government would move quickly to implement the rulings. Addressing same-sex couples directly, Tusk apologized “to all those who, for many years, felt rejected and humiliated.”

He urged Polish officials to set aside personal views and “respect the dignity of each individual,” reminding them that LGBTQ+ people “live around us, among us, near us, and that they deserve the same feelings of respect, dignity and love as any other person.”

LGBTQ+ advocates have long pushed for equal rights in Poland, one of the European Union’s most socially conservative countries, where same-sex marriage and civil partnerships remain illegal under national law. The recent court decisions do not require Poland to legalize same-sex marriage domestically.

Tusk’s government took office pledging to introduce civil unions for same-sex couples. However, progress has been slowed by opposition from conservative members of the governing coalition and resistance from President Karol Nawrocki, a vocal Catholic conservative.
