The Latvian Prime Minister is getting ‘woke’ with Greta.
Speaking at the international gas market conference Eurogas, which took place in Riga on Tuesday, Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins (New Unity) called on representatives of energy companies and experts to heed the concerns raised by Swedish teenage environmental activist Greta Thunberg, reported The Baltic Times.
“In Europe, climate and energy goals have always been going hand in hand to reduce emissions, promote renewable energy, energy efficiency and diversify energy sources. These are the preconditions to reducing emissions and achieving climate neutrality,” Karins said.
“Natural gas is not quite green energy, but it is a less polluting source of energy,” Karins said, adding that to promote green energy, it is necessary to think about using wind and solar energy, as well as biomass.
Karins ended his speech at the Eurogas conference with an appeal to heed the words of the “young Swedish activist” Greta Thunberg whose generation will soon replace today’s decision makers.
Europe has actively attempted to reduce its carbon emissions but at the same time increasing its reliance on Russia for natural gas. The Baltic nations seem to be in a quandary about this subject as the Nord Stream II pipeline from Russia to Germany, under the Baltic Sea, would increase security concerns for the former Soviet territories.
