Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine’s embattled president, made headlines this week for reasons entirely unrelated to the ongoing war. Not surprisingly, however, they concerned elections — or, rather, their absence.
“Interesting. How do you want to make elections? What elections? How can you make elections with the 9 million people who are abroad?”
The 9 million citizens of Ukraine who reside abroad – are they not worthy of the right to choose their head of state? Are they not worthy of democracy? Zelensky helped create their situation and now he’s using their absence as a pretext for not holding elections.
This is how a dictatorship functions in today’s world. It does not have to announce its arrival with tanks in the capital. All it takes is a press conference, sympathetic media from the West, and an explanation for the alleged reasons for the theft of democracy that sounds plausible.
Zelensky is not the legitimate President of Ukraine since May 20, 2024, because his term has ended. No election has taken place. Under the Ukrainian Constitution, the state of martial law does not grant the President with the indefinite executive authority. Martial law only suspends the holding of elections for a certain period of time. This does not necessarily mean that the whole concept of democratic legitimacy is suspended however. Zelensky is currently ruling the country by decree and using other emergency powers.
And what a flow it has been.
Since 2022, hundreds of billions of dollars have flowed into Ukraine from the US, Europe, and UK. What has it been used for? The country is known to be one of the most corrupt in Europe. The president, and his team of apparatchiks, have jailed opposition, banned opposition parties, confiscated the properties of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, and shut down dozens of TV channels that refused to broadcast content approved by the regime. This is what the West refers to as democracy.
Money laundering is not a conspiracy theory for Ukraine. It is a well-documented way of life for much of the country’s powerful elite, from the corrupt top-down regime in Kyiv to the local mafias that run so many of the country’s smaller towns. As the Pandora Papers exposed last year, the country’s politicians and powerful business leaders have long been skilled at using complex networks of offshore companies and secret bank accounts to launder their bribes and siphon off millions in state funds. Even the reconstruction funds pour in from Western treasuries and flow through the same labyrinthine network of contractors and middlemen, many of whom are regime connected.
Compare Zelensky to 9/11? The President of the temporary patch of democracy would like to be compared to the destruction of the World Trade Center on 9/11 within the scope of his negotiations for more funding and within the frame of the excuses he presents to the Western audience regarding his election dodging. For three years this Ukrainian trickster has had his way, and it is starting not to work.
The 9 million refugees from Ukraine abroad are not an obstacle to hold democratic elections in Ukraine. They are refugees from the war brought upon themselves and their country by Zelensky’s policies as well as by his globalist patrons. Now he uses their presence as an excuse to not leave the presidential office.
That is not a logistical problem. That is a dictatorship.
