Buried in the depths of a recent article at the New York Times (NYT), the blob mouthpiece, was a disclosure meant to send shockwaves through the Kremlin – it was the ultimate threat, and possibly a window into why Russian President Putin recently used a ballistic missile against the Ukrainian city of Dnipro — a missile which demonstrated Russia’s multiple independent re-entry vehicle technology, or MIRV. The projectile did not have nuclear warheads attached.
So U.S. and European officials are discussing deterrence as a possible security guarantee for Ukraine, such as stockpiling a conventional arsenal sufficient to strike a punishing blow if Russia violates a cease-fire, wrote the NYT.
Several officials even suggested that Mr. Biden could return nuclear weapons to Ukraine that were taken from it after the fall of the Soviet Union. That would be an instant and enormous deterrent. But such a step would be complicated and have serious implications.
In another shift this month, the Pentagon said it was lifting a ban on U.S. military contractors deploying to Ukraine to help the country’s military maintain and repair U.S.-provided weapons systems, particularly F-16 fighter jets and Patriot air defenses, adds the NYT.
In any event, there is little, short of starting a global thermonuclear war, that the West can do to alter the conflict prior to Trump taking office, or the full involvement of NATO forces. (don’t discount the mental illness in DC)
The likely path forward will be to cement Russian gains on the ground in any peace agreement, and probably neutral status for Ukraine.
The sad fact is — this war should have never started in the first place.
