On February 15 the Constitutional Court of Georgia abolished prison sentences for the purchase and possession of Cannabis up to 100 Grams for personal use.
The Constitutional Court was guided by its decision of 24 October 2015 on the case of “Citizen of Georgia Beka Tsikarishvili against the Parliament of Georgia.” The court found unconstitutional the statutes of the Criminal Code, which provided for detention for the acquisition and storage of dried cannabis and 70 grams for personal use.
The court noted that it was unacceptable to deprive a persons’ liberty with the arguments of protection of his own health, while the acquisition or possession of marijuana does not harm the health of others. In Georgia, 15.9% of five thousand respondents confirmed to have tried Cannabis at least once in their life. According to the latest data of the research center “Alternative Georgia” and the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health. The average age of marijuana consumption in Georgia among men is 19-22 years and for women – 20-22.
